Blogs > Burney's Bites

Burney's Bites will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Burney's Top 20 Boys Basketball Players

Top 20 Boys Hoopsters In "The OC"
1 Ray McCallum         Sr.        DCD
The most complete player in the entire state. This prep wunderkind does it all for the Yellowjackets and longtime head coach Kurt Keener. He's the consummate floor general in the mold Zeek Thomas. If you need him to score 30 he can. If you need him to score 15 and dish out 10 dimes he can do that too. The biggest difference between McCallum and fellow Mr. Basketball frontrunner Keith Appling of Detroit Pershing is that McCallum has better pro potential.
2 Carlton Brundidge   Jr.        Southfield
One of the best, if not the best, finishers I've ever seen at the prep level. Look for the UofM-bound Brundidge to pick of lots of double-doubles this season and become more than just a top notch scorer.
3 Roy Marble              Sr.        Southfield-Lathrup
Marble intends to "grit" his game up a bit this year and attack the hoop more than he has in the past. The future Iowa Hawkeye is an expert of the finesse game, but if this past summer tells us anything, he will look to create more for his teammates this year. He's an underrated passer and head coach Mike Avery wants to utilize that facet of his game.
4 Richaud Pack            Sr.        Birmingham Seaholm
Pack is a silky smooth scoring guard who is as prolific in the classroom as he is on the hardwood. Heading to Florida International next year to start his collegiate career, I say Seaholm's very own Pac-Man devours the competition to the tune of back-to-back league titles and the Maples first district crown in more than a dozen years.
5 Kyle Vinales              Sr.        North Farmington
This Raider great is an explosive scorer with great range.  Signed with DII GV State, but is without a doubt a D1 talent.
6 Amir Williams          Jr.        DCD – Big man with a big game whose stock is on the rise
7 Matt Kamienieke     Sr.        Clarkston (Ball State) – Will up his scoring this year with the departure of Brandon Pokely and Tommy Staton and a much improved outside shot. A slightly-smaller Paul Davis- type who has gotten better every year since being brought up to varsity.
8 Anthony Adams        Jr.        Pontiac  - a warrior of a point guard with a high bball IQ and outstanding playmaking ability
9 K. Martin-Manley    Sr.        Brother Rice (Bowling Green-FB) – Super fast on the floor with the quickest release in the county
10 Lance Hopkin         Sr.        Holly – has the nickname "The Hammer" for a reason. The kid's a beast on the court. He crushes defenders with his tenacity and hot-shooting. Can score from anywhere on the floor and the heart and soul of the Broncos program the past two years.
11 Pee Wee Barnes    Jr.        Southfield – The definition of a cagey floor general
12 Samer Ozier           Jr.        Novi – Inside-outside threat whose a rising star to say the least. Possibly the best long range bomber in the county
13 Bobby Wunderlich Sr.        Troy – One of the best and hardest working true forwards in the area
14 Ray Tillman               Jr.        AH Avondale – A crafty scorer and superb defender
15 Thomas Lovachis    Sr.        Holly – This "youtube phenom" will take the Flint Metro Conference by storm when he becomes eligible to suit up in January. I forsee myself nicknaming him "The Flying Bronco" and him teaming with Lance Hopkin to make Holly a hot-commodity late in the season
16 Bryan Coleman      Sr.        Southfield-Lathrup – Athletic forward with a soft touch
17 Urban Bingham      Jr.        North Farmington – After becoming eligible second semester, Bingham easily end up being one of the best post men in the OC by the conclusion of the year
18 Ashton Curd          Jr.        MH Madison – Solid over floor game
19 Joe Baker               Jr.        Clawson – Baker is a pure-scorer and his presence in the Trojans line-up makes Clawson a legitimate threat to walk away with the MAC conference championship.
20 Tony Harris            Jr.        AH Avondale – elusive, speed-demon of a playmaking point guard
